Unilateral Biportal Endoscopy (UBE)

Unilateral Biportal Endoscopy (UBE)

Open surgery is the age-old technique of spinal decompression that involves cutting of structures from skin to spinal canal and taking the pressure off the spinal cord under direct visualization with the naked eye.

This technique involves suturing of the muscles and the associated ligaments so the patients have slower recovery compared to the modern techniques of minimally invasive spine surgery.

Types of Unilateral Biportal Endoscopy (UBE):

UBE Decompression

It involves partial removal of lamina (laminotomy) and flavectomy via biportal endoscopy approach. This minimizes the trauma to the surrounding tissue and preserves the normal lamina removing only the pathological part of it.

UBE Discectomy

This procedure involves removal of pathological disc via endoscopy approach. As it involves endoscopic vision the magnification provided by the technique gives excellent bleeding control specially handling the nerves.

UBE Fusion

This procedure is done for patients with instability (spondylolisthesis) in the vertebral column in the vertebral column. Here decompression plus discectomy is done via UBE approach and the disc is approached by artificial cage under continuous endoscopy visualization.
